Department of School of Public Health and Community Medicine

The School of Public Health and Community Medicine (SPHCM) is responsible for teaching and supervising Undergraduate (UG) students of MBBS, BDS, BSc. Nursing, BSc. MLT; Junior Residents (Community Medicine & Tropical Diseases) and PG students of MPH.

The UG teaching activities include Structured Interactive Sessions (SISs), Learning In Field (LIF), Seminars, Family Health Exercise (FHE), Problem Based Learning (PBL), Community based residential postings, Community Diagnosis Programs (CDP), Epidemiological Skills and Management (EPIDMAN) and Management services for health services (HEALTHMAN).

The MD Community Medicine and Tropical Diseases teaching includes training the residents in public health disciplines, community based clinical and public health activities, Research Methodologies, clinical postings to Internal Medicine including Tropical Ward, Gynaecology and Obstetrics, Paediatrics, GP & EM, Psychiatry, Orthopaedics, Ophthalmology, clinical Laboratory and Urban and Rural Health facilities. The residents are trained to supervise the LIF, FHE, assist and participate in community based residential postings of CDP, EpidMan, HealthMan for the UG. Routine teaching learning activities are carried out by the residents as seminars, journal clubs, recent advances and socio-clinical case presentations on weekly schedule.

The teaching activities for PG students of MPH includes regular classes in all disciplines of public health, rural and urban health centers postings and elective postings to NGOs/INGOs, Regular Seminars, Journal Clubs, Review articles and recent advances seminars on a weekly basis by the MPH students. Medical students from different European Universities come yearly on an elective posting program under SPHCM. The students in their elective postings are posted in district health systems, community based residential postings and clinical postings in various relevant departments.

Various diverse research projects have been undertaken by the department and most of them find their way to the national and international forums. The SPCM has further plans to start Masters in Hospital administration course (MHA), PhD courses in various sub-disciplines of public health besides the capacity building and further strengthening of the current resources and academic excellence of the school.
