The Department of Psychiatry started from 1994 along with the MBBS course in the college and extended its PG program since 1999.

The department confers the basic responsibilities of Health Services, teaching, research and community health services including increasing mental health awareness of people of the eastern region of Nepal. Besides regular undergraduate teaching learning activities, it imparts expertise to its residents through WARD and OPD exposure and regular academic activities. Regular research works and publications are also done.

Hospital services in form of regular and speciality OPDs, In-patient services and emergency services. The department also prioritises community awareness camps and outreach clinics.

The department plans to start M.Phil program in Clinical Psychology in future. Also aims are to strengthen the current academic activities, expansion of clinical services, improvement of workforce and training and community education.
