Department of Prosthodontics

The specialty is more accurately defined as branch of dentistry pertaining to the restoration and maintenance of oral function, comfort, appearance and/or the replacement of missing teeth and contiguous oral and maxillofacial tissues with artificial substitutes. It is thus concerned with bridges, dentures, implants or any other devices that replace missing natural tooth, teeth or jaw structures. Located in southern part of College of Dental Surgery, department of Prosthodontics has well-equipped clinical, academic and laboratory infrastructures. The department is continuously upgraded and updated with the latest advances in the field and has acquired the necessities for the service of patients as well as for education and research of the students in the college.

Vision, mission and goals

To develop well-trained and service-oriented professionals having adequate knowledge, skills and morality is mission of the department. The goals of the department include: 1. To produce qualitative community-oriented doctors and specialists as per the principal goal of the Institute 2. To provide basic and advanced education in the field of prosthodontics with adequate exposure in various activities 3. To provide cognitive knowledge and skills for managing the patients 4. To improve the understanding of prosthodontic education with broader concept of prosthetic and maxillofacial rehabilitation

Courses

BDS program

The undergraduate program provides the opportunity to be acquainted with the field of prosthodontics and is devout to produce quality dental surgeons in 5 and half years’ time span. The prosthodontics is taught from the first year of BDS through final year. The department conducts SIS, Labex, SGD, CBL, seminars and CLIP by which students are exposed to theoretical as well as practical spectra of knowledge. 50 students take admission annually for the program.

MDS program

Post-graduate residency program is run in the department with duration of 3 academic years. The program is structured to achieve knowledge and skill in theoretical and clinical as well as laboratory, attitude, communicative skills and ability to research with understanding of social, cultural, educational and environmental background of the society. Completion of curriculum encompasses attaining the knowledge of the basic and applied sciences, acquiring high level clinical skills, conducting original research as thesis and submitting a dissertation related to the field. The department orients the residents in the aforementioned objectives via discussions, clinical and laboratory postings, seminars, thesis, library dissertations, journal clubs, participation in national and international conferences and workshops, didactic activities for undergraduate students etc. Each year 2 residents are enrolled in the program. Certificate in Dental Science (Mechanics) It is the proposed course for the in-service technicians of the department. It is designed to prepare well-trained laboratory personnel with adequate laboratory skills.

Services

The department provides various treatments to the patients that include complete denture for completely edentulous patients, removable partial denture/fixed partial denture/implant prosthesis for partially edentulous patients and other maxillofacial prostheses. Fabrication of various treatment prostheses like stents, mouth-exercising screws and splints is also done in the department.

Laboratory

A well-equipped laboratory is installed in the department which has the facilities for fabricating full-metal, metal-ceramic and all-ceramic fixed partial dentures and crowns, framework for cast partial denture and also computer aided designing and machining (CAD-CAM) for crowns and bridge.
