Department of Periodontology and Oral Implantology
Periodontology & Oral Implantology is the science which deals with the study of the health and diseases of the investing and supporting structures of the natural teeth and dental implants, oral mucous membrane, and the prevention and the treatment of their diseases. Over the past decade or so, implant dentistry has become a basic part of periodontology. This integrated structure of this subject has widened the scope as well as given a greater challenge to a periodontist in research and clinical expertise. The Department of Periodontology & Oral Implantology, established in 1999, is well planned and has separate undergraduate and postgraduate sections equipped with about 15 modern dental chairs fitted with ultrasonic scalers.
The undergraduate programme
The undergraduate programme, which started in 1999, consists of a didactic and a clinical component wherein the students acquire adequate knowledge of anatomy of the periodontium and preventive and treatment aspects of periodontal disease. The students are trained with basic skills to render non surgical and preventive periodontal procedures. Introduction to surgical periodontal procedures is facilitated by observing and assisting as procedures are being performed. All these are done under faculty supervision. At the end of the training period, students should be competent enough to diagnose periodontal problems, plan and perform the basic as well as emergency periodontal procedures.
Postgraduate Programme
The department also offers a Master of Dental Surgery course (MDS) in Periodontology & Oral Implantology since September 2011; a 3 year university based postgraduate programme that encompasses a research project (dissertation), library dissertation, journal club and seminar presentations. The students are given opportunity to learn and master a variety of surgical and non surgical clinical procedures.
In the field of research
Various researches have been carried out in collaboration with the Department of Internal Medicine, and Department of Biochemistry in areas such as association of periodontal disease and systemic diseases.
