Department of Pedodontics & Preventive Dentistry
The Department of Pedodontics and Preventive Dentistry focuses on pediatric/adolescent growth and development, disease causality and prevention, child psychology and behavior management, and all aspects of the highly-specialized Pediatric restorative techniques and modalities along with treatment of children with special health care needs.
The department was established in 2001 with six chairs. The aim of the department is to impart comprehensive training to undergraduate students so that they acquire necessary knowledge, skills and attitude which will enable them to effectively and efficiently deal with pediatric dental problems. The department was recognized for our under graduate program by the Nepal Medical Council in 1998 and for post graduate program in 2011. The department has a separate under graduate and post graduate clinics. Currently, the department has18 chairs in undergraduate clinics of which five are automatic chairs with ultrasonic scalers. There is an area for diagnosis and counseling and separate children’s recreation and entertainment section. The department has a laboratory area with separate hall for conducting undergraduate preclinical classes. Students get to learn to use state-of-the-art equipments like Intra-oral Camera and various recent materials for their work. The department has a departmental library. The departmental library has 20 titled books and journals for various reference purposes with a computer and internet facility.
• Diagnosis and treatment planning for oral health problems in children including adolescents. • Preventive treatment based on caries risk assessment: oral hygiene measures/ instructions, fluoride treatment, pit and fissure sealant and PRR application • Paediatric Operative Dentistry and Endodontics. • Prosthodontic rehabilitation including cleft lip and palate patient management. • Oral surgical procedures including extractions/ impactions of teeth and various other minor oral surgical procedures including trauma management. • Preventive and Interceptive orthodontic treatment like guidance of developing occlusion along with orthodontic interception of developing malocclusions, space management including fixed and removable space maintenance and regaining therapy, prevention and interception of oral habits, serial extractions etc. • Comprehensive management of medically compromised patients and children with special health care needs. • Dental Health Education
UG Curriculum
The undergraduate training program commences in third year, and fourth year of BDS. During three months of total clinical posting, students are trained in diagnosis and treatment planning, preventive procedures like fluoride application, brushing methods, pit and fissure sealants, PRR and space maintenance etc. They also undergo training in various restorative and minor oral surgical procedures.
Postgraduate Curriculum
The post graduate training program is of three years duration starting first with preclinical exercises and learning about comprehensive examination of children and training in research methodology. The clinical training program starts after 6 months with application of their skills and knowledge for comprehensive treatment of children. This program is characteristically intensive and requires organization, dedication, focus and hard work from the post graduates. Pediatric Dentistry Department has an established culture of active learning with relatively little didactic instructions. The media of teaching and learning include seminars, case discussions, journal clubs, table clinic, undergraduate teaching, laboratory simulation exercises, clinical work, workshops and conferences.
