Department of Pediatrics and Adolescents Medicine
The Department of Pediatrics and Adolescents Medicine started from 1994 along with the MBBS course in the college and extended its PG program since 1999. Super-specialization in Neonatology (DM Neonatology) is going to be added soon.
Department of Pediatrics and Adolescents Medicine have been contributing a lot in the development of the institute since the time of its establishment. The department confers the basic responsibilities of Health Services, teaching, research and community health services including increasing health awareness of people of the eastern region of Nepal regarding childhood problems. Various faculties have interest in different sub-specialities and running sub-speciality clinics like Nephrology clinic, Neurology clinic, Genetic clinic, Immunology clinic, High Risk and Well baby clinic.
Besides regular undergraduate teaching learning activities, it imparts expertise to its residents through WARD and OPD exposure and regular academic activities (case presentations, topic review, Journal presentations, Subject and Gross Seminars and Interdepartmental conference). Regular research works and publications are also done.
Hospital services in form of regular and speciality OPDs, In-patient services and emergency services.The department has plans to start Pediatric emergency on its own, Nutritional and alcohol related diseases clinic, Pediatric dialysis Unit in the upcoming year.
The department has been regularly conducting workshops and training related to child health viz. CME on Immunization updates, OPV seroconversion in patients with diarrhoea, Workshop on curriculum development for DM Neonatology, module on comprehensive newborn care, etc. and further plans to conduct workshop and trainings to promote breast feeding and pediatric emergency care to all health workers of various districts of eastern Nepal. The department is also involved in various child health programs like IMCI, National Immunization Programme and Polio eradication programme. It is also involved in pediatric health policy makings and Surveillance systems for notifiable diseases.
