Department of Oral Pathology

Oral pathology is the specialty of dentistry that investigates the cause, nature, process and effects of diseases affecting the oral and maxillofacial regions. The department of Oral Histology and Pathology is involved in training the undergraduate BDS students regarding oral biology and oral pathology. Oral biology is an essential subject for understanding the basic aspects regarding dental anatomy, oral embryology, physiology and histology. Oral pathology is essential for understanding the nature, etio-pathogenesis, histopathology and prognosis of diseases of oral hard and soft tissues. The department was established in 1999 with the aim of undergraduate teaching and learning activities and in 2014, a state of the art histopathology lab was established with the aim of diagnosing various diseases affecting the oral and maxillofacial region.

The department of Oral Histology and Pathology is committed to create and promote an academic environment for the undergraduate teaching-learning activities and an excellent environment for patient care and research in the field of oral pathology. UG Curriculum

The department is involved in teaching Undergraduate BDS students of IInd and IIIrd year in the subjects of Oral Anatomy & Histology and Oral Pathology, respectively. In Oral Biology (Oral Anatomy & Histology), about 75 hours of theory and 210 hours of practical classes are taken with respect to oral histology slides and dental anatomy. In Oral Pathology, about 85 hours of theory and 105 hours of practical classes are taken wherein students are trained to identify the pathology slides and casts & specimens related to oral diseases.

The undergraduate students are trained in order to acquire the skills in • Identification of permanent teeth with help of plaster models and extracted teeth • Wax carving of permanent teeth • Microscopic identifications of normal oral tissues as well as common oral lesions • Study of teeth anomalies through specimens and plaster casts • Basic procedures related to forensic odontology

Intern Postings

During the internship, the students are posted for three weeks. During the time, students are familiarized with the various histopathological techniques of oral pathology. They perform ground sectioning of extracted permanent or deciduous teeth. Routine discussion and demonstration related to Forensic Odontology is conducted to broaden the knowledge of undergraduate students.

Infrastructure

The department is equipped adequately for academic programmes and routine histopathological procedures. The department is facilitated with 20 monocular microscopes and one binocular microscope. A museum for preservation of various biopsy specimens and models for academic demonstrations is also established. A separate Forensic Odotology Unit has been kept wherein the students are trained and educated regarding methods of odontometric identification, sex determination, analysis of bite marks etc. The department has its own seminar cum discussion room.

Research

The department is involved in research activities in the field of early detection of potentially malignant oral diseases and oral cancer. Also studies regarding nicotine dependency and topics under forensic odontology are under process.

Hospital service

The department is well equipped with basic laboratory facilities required for histopathological processing. Routine biopsy related to the oral and maxillofacial regions are processed and cases reported.
