Department of Oral Medicine & Radiology

Oral Medicine is a branch of dentistry engaged in diagnosis and primarily nonsurgical management of local diseases of the oral cavity and surrounding structures as well as oral manifestations of systemic disease. Oral Medicine provides an essential link between dentistry and medicine and practitioners in this field must possess a thorough knowledge of basic physiological and pathological mechanisms that contribute to health and disease. Evaluation and management of oral medicine patients is often a shared responsibility between the dentist and physician and considerable overlap exists between the two professions that is distinguished only by the individual’s knowledge and training. The Department deals with diagnosis and nonsurgical management of oral diseases and medically related disorders affecting the oral and maxillofacial region. Oral potentially malignant disorders (OPMDs) diagnosis, management, oral cancer screening and investigation, tempormandibular disorders diagnosis and pharmacologic and non surgical management, orofacial pain diagnosis and management, evaluation and management of patients with oral ulcer and vesiculobullous lesions are routine procedures of the department. Punch and scalpel biopsies are routinely done for investigating oral mucosal diseases. The major cases like malignant conditions are also diagnosed and referred to Cancer Centers for further management.

Dentomaxillofacial imaging such as digital panoramic imaging, skull radiographs, TMJ views and lateral oblique of mandible are routine investigations. Intra oral imaging (periapical, occlusal, bite wing radiographs) are available in both conventional and digital format. At present, the department is running efficiently for providing patient care and undergraduate teaching/learning. The department is supported by two faculty, two dental surgeons, three radiographic technicians, one nursing and one supporting staffs presently.

Department has been conducting researches pertaining to OPMDs, oral cancer, trigeminal neuralgia, molecular, epidemiological studies and randomized control trial on oral submucous fibrosis, tobacco cessation programs including dentomaxillofacial radiology studies.
