Department of Internal Medicine

Etablished in 1994 along with the undergraduate programme, the PG program of MD (Internal Medicine) at BPKIHS started in 1999. The department undertakes 3 basic responsibilities: teaching, service and research. Besides these, the department actively participates in various community and extramural activities of the institute. It is trying hard to groom and developits faculty and students to acquire skill in teaching and learning activities, professional expertise and research acumen. Each faculty pursues Internal Medicine and a sub-speciality interest. Thus it has been able to form a nucleus of Cardiology, Tropical Medicine/ Infectious diseases, Gastroenterology and Hepatology, Pulmonary Medicine and Endocrinology. The department further proposes to develop nucleus of Neurology, Hematoncology and Rheumatology.

At postgraduate level, the department trains doctors in Internal Medicine. The residents take care of the patients directly in the medicine wards, OPDs, Speciality clinics, Emergency and also attend calls from other departments. Residents also spend time in periphery hospitals and departments of psychiatry and dermatology. They also take care of patients in Medical ICU, CCU and Dialysis ward. Thesis work is mandatory and academic activities in form of Seminars, Journal Clubs, Case presentations and topic review, mortality review and bedside learning are routinely done. Undergraduate level teaching learning activities are continued in form of Structured Interactive Sessions, Case Based Learning, Sharpen Your Clinical Skills, Small Group Discussions and Bedside Learning. Research works and regular publication (articles, chapters, books and e-publications) in national and international forums forms other dimension of the departmental activity.

Hospital services in form of regular OPDs, Speciality clinics (Gastroenterology and Hepatology, Cardiology, Adult Chest, Endocrine & Diabetes and Infectious diseases) and In-patient services run smoothly. Besides, calls are attended from other departments and emergency services are also provided. Cardiology services provided are ECG, TMT, ABPM, Holter, ECHO, Coronary Angiography, Coronary Angiography + Angioplasty, Renal Angiography, PTMC, PPI, TPI, TPI + PPI, Pericardiocentesis etc. Endoscopy and Colonoscopy are performed under Gastrology services. Bronchoscopy and PFTs are performed routinely. Dialysis Services (Peritoneal and Hemodialysis), Medical ICU services are provided on routine and emergency basis. Centre for Tropical Medicine and Infectious Diseases has established molecular biology laboratory (leishmaniasis) at BPKIHS and also conducts short term trainings in Tropical Medicine and Infectious Diseases. The department plans to start Doctorate of Medicine Courses (DM) in Cardiology, Respiratory Critical Care and Sleep Medicine and Gastroenterology as the curriculum has already been finalised from the Curriculum Development Workshop for superspeciality subjects at Dharan in May 2012.
