The Department successfully continues to excel in the fulfilment of its objectives of Teaching Activities, Research and Hospital Services since its establishment in 1994 along with the medical college. The postgraduate program in the department was established in 1999.

Currently the department runs MD and MSc. courses in addition to the regular classes to Undergraduate students and regular research activities and publications. Hospital services are provided in form of Clinical lab services (Routine and Special Biochemistry), Therapeutic drug monitoring and immunoassays. The laboratory of BPKIHS is internationally accredited with an external quality control.

Besides upgrading its current services and practices, the department further plans to set up molecular biology lab and introduce specialized fluorescence based immunoassays. The department is keen on continuing the community based researches in association with other departments and providing summer/winter ahort courses to staffs/ students of various other departments.
