Department of Anaesthesiology and Critical Care
The Department of Anaesthesiology and Critical Care was established with the medical college in 1994. The postgraduate program in the department was established in 1999. The department imparts the anaesthesia and critical care education expertise to the junior residents of the department and also to those of the department of General Practice and General Surgery besides the regular classes to the undergraduate students. It also conducts various research activities in the institute in addition to the collaborative studies with other institutions.
Regular Hospital services in form of Elective surgery anaesthesia, Emergency Surgery anaesthesia, PAC/MUA clinic and Pain Clinic are also provided. The department takes charge of the ICU care services to the patients admitted in the ICU and attends calls for critical care in Emergency and other departments. Anaesthesia for MECT (Modified Electroconvulsive therapy) for psychiatric patients is also provided. Opiod analgesics are also dispensed to the cancer patients as a part of palliative care to the patients.
The department is up next to start Patient controlled Analgesia (PCA) and acute pain service in BPKIHS. Procuring further advanced equipments and strengthening its current services are in the minds in addition to continuing the excellence in education and research services. Various shortcourses/ CMEs/ work groups in anaesthesia and critical care have been proposed and are on the way.
