General Practice and Emergency Medicine

With the belief of wholesome medical care and approach the department was established in 2001 by Dr. Owen Lewis from Australia. Initially named as Department of Family Medicine, the Department was renamed into Department of General Practice and Emergency since 2009. With faculties from Australia to support in the initial years, the department has grown up to as the largest department in terms of manpower and comprises of both the General OPD services and emergency care services.

Unique in the curriculum, as it provides both General Practice and Emergency care education under one umbrella, the department conducts regular classes for the undergraduates and postgraduates. An undergraduate has regular Structured Interactive Sessions, Case Based Learning Sessions, OPD postings, Emergency Postings, Case Discussions, Topic Discussions, Small Group Discussions and Practical Learning Sessions. Besides, an undergraduate can also opt for an elective posting in the department for further exposure. Postgraduates are also provided with learning experiences from the department itself (through Departmetal classes like seminars, case discussions, journal clubs etc) and also through the postings in various other departments of the college itself. The postgraduate students are sent to periphery postings every year for adequate peripheral exposures too. The unique curriculum content of the department has been exemplary to various other medical schools and colleges too.

The department also holds CME sessions in form of regular Case discussions, Topic review and Mortality Conference sessions for the Medical Officers and Nursing staffs of the department. It also holds Basic Emergency Care (BEC) Course for new Medical Officers and Nursing staffs twice every weekly and issues the BEC certificate after the successful completion of the course. A range of topics are covered in the course along with practical scenarios, dummy examples, experience sharing sessions and expert opinions. The department regularly organises short term training courses in Emergency management. Disaster management trainings and drills, Drills on basic and advanced emergency care, workshops and hands-on sessions on ABC of emergency are few to mention that have been recently organised by the department. Primary Trauma Care trainings for BPKIHS Staffs and region ambulance driver trainings are held on regular basis both inside the BPKIHS and also at the periphery in association with Red Cross Society.

It also conducts various research activities in the institute and also in the collaboration with other institutions both from the nation and abroad and the researches make way to the journals more than often. Regular Hospital services are provided in form of General OPD services and Emergency care services. OPD services run 6 days a week and wholesome approach for spectrum of diseases are taken into account as a basic.

The Emergency at BPKIHS is currently the largest (in terms of manpower) in Nepal. The Australasian TRIAGE scoring system in BPKIHS is the first instance as such in Nepal and now the similar practice is being replicated by other institutions of Nepal and India following the huge success at BPKIHS. The department not only provides services to people coming to BPKIHS but also at community level through various outreach clinics and community health camps. The department provides General Practice services as training cum service sites to peripheral hospitals of Illam District Hospital (Illam), Phulkumari Mahato Memorial Hospital (Siraha), Koshi Zonal Hospital (Biratnagar) and AMDA (Damak).

The Department of General Practice and Emergency of BPKIHS is an integral member of the General Physicians Association of Nepal (GPAN) and also a member of WONCA, the world association of the General Practitioners. Recently the department also organised the national conference of the GPAN (GPANCON) which was the first instance of it being held outside the Capital valley.

The department has plans to start Fellowship in Emergency Medicine. In fact the curriculum conference for this has already been developed and is for final drafting. Speciality course in form of M. Phil. EM had been proposed.
